Shortly before a storm, veteran Sebastian Brendel also won another gold medal. On the long distance over 5000 meters, the 34-year-old from Potsdam relegated the Hungarian Balasz Adolf to second place in the Canadian with a strong final sprint. The day before, Brendel had already won the European Championship title over the Olympic 1000 meter distance with his Berlin partner Tim Hecker.

Jule Haake and Paulina Paszek had previously secured bronze in the kayak double over 500 meters. The Poles won ahead of Belgium on the Olympic Canal in Oberschleißheim.
