European Championships 2028 and 2032: These countries are hosting the tournaments! | Sports

Now it is official!

UEFA has determined which countries will be allowed to host the European Football Championships in 2028 and 2032. The final decision was made at a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee.

As expected, the 2028 European Championship will take place in Great Britain and Ireland. The 2032 European Championship goes to Italy and Turkey. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin (55) announced this on Tuesday afternoon from the UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

In both cases, the award was considered a mere formality in advance. There were no other competitors in each case.

The ten venues for the 2028 European Championship have already been determined, including six in England. In addition to London’s Wembley Stadium, other games will also take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Etihad Stadium and the not yet completed Everton Stadium as well as St. James’ Park in Newcastle and Villa Park in Birmingham.

Surprising: Anfield Road (Liverpool’s home stadium) is not included. The reason for this is that the playing field does not have the specified minimum length. Old Trafford (home of Manchester United) is also not included because the stadium may soon be renovated and availability was therefore not certain.

Wales is represented by the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Scotland by Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Ireland by Dublin’s Aviva Stadium and Northern Ireland by Casement Park in Belfast.

Already the final of the European Championship 2021 took place at London’s Wembley Stadium – the tournament saw games played in a total of eleven countries. England lost to Italy 6-7 on penalties in the final. In 2028, the European Championship final could take place again at Wembley.

The awarding of the 2032 European Championship to Italy and Turkey is a great success, especially for the two former world-class goalkeepers Gianluigi Buffon (45) and Volkan Demirel (41). UEFA entrusts the 2032 European Championship to the Italian delegation led by Buffon and the Turkish delegation represented by Demirel.

Turkey had previously withdrawn its candidacy for 2028 against the favored United Kingdom and Ireland. The UEFA decision-making committee includes, among others, Hans-Joachim Watzke and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as representatives from Germany. Next year the European Championships will take place here in Germany.

Italy was the sole host of the European Championships in 1968 and 1980, and Turkey’s hosting role in 2032 will be a first. It is not yet clear which stadiums will be played in.
