Europe cannot afford a new euro crisis

Europe cannot afford a new euro crisis, says economic historian Adam Tooze. If necessary, Germany would also have to take responsibility for Italy’s debts.

Mr. Tooze, a few weeks ago you were back in Europe after a long time. As a Brit living in New York, what were your impressions, what has changed?
My first impression in Berlin was that very little has changed. Everything was the same as always, and I promptly contracted Corona – for the first time, by the way.

We’re sorry! And apart from that?
If you look at Europe from the perspective of the USA, you always get the impression that problems are really being worked on in Europe – be it the climate crisis or the dispute with Russia. You are much more concerned with the matter at hand, unlike in Great Britain or here in the USA, where politics is paralyzed again.
