Europa League: Angeliño lets Leipzig celebrate

Status: 04/28/2022 11:04 p.m

With a lot of luck, RB Leipzig made a decent starting position for the second leg at Glasgow Rangers in the semi-final first leg of the Europa League.

The Saxons won 1-0 on Thursday evening (04/28/2022). Angeliño scored the goal of the day with a volley from the second row after a corner (85′). Leipzig’s chances of reaching the final remain high after the narrow home win, and the Europa League and DFB Cup double, where Leipzig meets SC Freiburg in Berlin, is also a realistic goal. It would be the first title in the club’s young history.

“It was difficult, but we now have a small lead when we go to Glasgow next week. We’re in the final with half a leg – and then you want to win a title too,” said club boss Oliver Mintzlaff on RTL +, “we’re happy us that we kept a clean sheet and still scored the goal. It certainly wasn’t a great game from us.”

No chance to score in the first half

Especially in the first 45 minutes, the Saxons managed to approach the goal, but not a single shot on goal. The Scottish guests played very defensively away from home and didn’t create any significant chances before the break either.

Rangers have two good chances after the break

But that changed abruptly after the break: Glasgow’s Ryan Kent narrowly missed the Leipzig goal after a counterattack (51′), just two minutes later James Tavernier thundered a header from Joe Aribo over the hosts’ box.

In the somewhat more offensive game, Christopher Nkunku had Leipzig’s first chance to score, but after a one-two with Dominik Szoboszlai he shot from the left edge of the penalty area in the middle of the Rangers goal.

Nkunku forgives several times

After that, the game flattened out again – offensive actions remained in short supply. But in the 71st minute they almost got the opener: again after a pass from Szoboszlai, Nkunku keeper Allan McGregor played the shot on goal, but shot well over Glasgow’s goal. Similarly ten minutes later: After a cross from Angeliño, Nkunku failed to find the opponent’s goal when he tried to head the ball. Shortly before the end, Angeliño redeemed the Saxons with his volley, which hit the bottom left of the goal as a bounce.

The second leg at Glasgow’s Ibrox Park will take place on 5 May 2022 at 9pm.
