Midfielder Robert Andrich may have broken his metatarsal in Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-0 draw in the Europa League semi-final first leg at AS Roma.

“It’s bad news,” said coach Xabi Alonso: “We have to see if the left foot is broken or if it’s just a bruise. But of course we’re concerned at the moment that it’s a serious injury.”

While the team enjoyed a rest day in Rome, Andrich flew home for in-depth investigations. The whole thing was “very painful,” said the 28-year-old, but he didn’t want to make any prognosis: “I have no idea. Fortunately, I’ve never had such an experience. That’s why I can’t assess it,” he said: “Unfortunately, I have I heard a bad noise, which is a bit scary. But I’m going to assume the best for now.”

Kossounou and Frimpong also hit

Odilon Kossounou and Jeremie Frimpong also suffered injuries from the game. Kossounou, who had already limped off after 34 minutes and was supported by the doctors, had a relatively clear feeling, said Alonso. The defender probably suffered a torn muscle fiber.

Sports director Simon Rolfes also didn’t seem to be expecting anything good: “It might be a bit more with Odi.” Those responsible are less worried about winger Jeremie Frimpong, who, unlike the other two, stayed in Rome on Friday. “He took a beating in the first half and again at the end,” said Rolfes. “But it’s probably not that much of a problem for him.”
