EU_Electricity market reform: Europe is standing in its own way – Economy

The EU states have agreed on the long-overdue reform of the electricity market, congratulations. The fact that this once again required a crisis is symptomatic. Now further steps must follow.

As if the dependence on raw materials from abroad wasn’t bad enough, on oil from the Middle East and the USA, on Russian gas and increasingly on LNG from other autocracies: the EU is also getting in its own way when it comes to energy policy. This is even stipulated in the Lisbon Treaty, Article 194: The aim is to jointly “ensure the functioning of the energy market” and to “promote the interconnection of energy networks”. At the same time, energy policy should also be a national matter. A Member State may determine for itself “the conditions for the use of its energy resources, its choice between different energy sources and the general structure of its energy supply”.
