The federal government now has five days to agree on a common line on the issue of supply chains. With Germany’s vote, it became clear on Friday that the EU’s plans for expanded liability for companies for their business and their suppliers would have found the necessary majority. Because of the dispute in the coalition, Germany announced an abstention, which seems like a no vote. Together with other foreseeable abstentions, such as Italy’s, the EU supply chain law would have failed. A decision should be made next week, on Ash Wednesday. If Germany then agrees, the directive should come. But that is considered unlikely in Berlin.
