EU: More rights for platform workers – Economy

People who deliver food or drive others in cars should be given more rights across the EU. That’s good news. But the federal government is once again not doing well.

Nicolas Schmit knew how to celebrate after the big surprise. It is an “important day” for workers of the digital age, said the Luxembourg EU Commissioner, including food couriers, Uber drivers and others who are self-employed for platform services. The EU Council of Ministers had previously voted, without the votes of France and Germany, for a new directive that would give platform workers more rights. This meant that a long-standing blockade suddenly dissolved happily. And of course Schmit, 70, the Social Democrats’ top candidate in the European elections, claimed this as his success.
