EU environmental policy: EPP undermines its Commission President – Politics

Ursula von der Leyen hovers so far above things that party politics and the intricacies of EU legislation are a few sizes too small for her. The President of the European Commission likes to deal with the big questions: the EU’s position on China, sanctions against Russia, financial aid for Ukraine or the AI revolution. She stays away from the dispute in the European Parliament about the EU nature conservation law, one of the more important laws of her green deal. She leaves that to her executive vice-president, Frans Timmermans, a social democrat from the Netherlands, an advocate of the law – and now the enemy of the Christian Democratic EPP group. The fact that MPs from her own party are fighting the new nature conservation rules doesn’t seem to affect von der Leyen, so far it hasn’t asked her to say a word.
