EU Commission – Against high electricity prices – Economy

With a reform of the electricity market, the EU Commission wants to avoid skyrocketing prices for consumers and promote the expansion of renewable energies. Above all, long-term contracts for electricity generation from renewable energies and nuclear power are to be promoted. This emerges from a proposal submitted by the authority in Strasbourg on Tuesday. Renewable energies are the ticket to energy sovereignty, said Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans. The authority proposes, for example, a right to fixed-price contracts and contracts with dynamic pricing. In order to boost investments in renewable energies, the EU states should, according to the Commission’s proposal, guarantee electricity producers a minimum price for electricity if they make new investments.
