Ethiopia – Tigray ceasefire – Politics

The Ethiopian government on Thursday declared an immediate humanitarian ceasefire aimed at facilitating supplies to people in northern Ethiopia, particularly in the Tigray region. According to the UN, around nine million people in northern Ethiopia are dependent on food aid. Prime Minister and Nobel Prize winner Abiy Ahmed has been accused of a de facto blockade of Tigray in recent months. The military conflict between the Ethiopian central government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) began in November 2020. The US and the EU have cut aid, the annual inflation rate in 2021 was around 35 percent.
