Zero-knowledge (ZK) proof solutions have proven to be critical in helping scale the Ethereum ecosystem, but Proto-Danksharding is expected. This will significantly reduce roll-up costs, according to Nicolas Liochon, head of zkEVM Linea at Consensys.
In conversation with Andrew Fenton, editor of the magazine Cointelegraph in Korea Blockchain Week, Liochon estimated that Proto-Danksharding Can reduce roll-up costs by another 10 times.
Proto-danksharding Also known as the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP), identifier EIP-4844 aims to reduce the cost of rollups. This is basically a collection of off-chain transactions and data. and send the proof of calculation to the Ethereum blockchain.

Liochon explains that Linea offers transactions that are 15 times cheaper than transactions made on Ethereum’s layer 1, but rollups are still limited by the fact that transactions are posted in call data in the Ethereum block.

EIP-4844 introduces data blocks that can be sent and attached to the block. Data stored in blocks cannot be accessed by the Ethereum Virtual Machine and will be deleted after a period of time. This greatly reduces transaction costs.
“In fact Roll-up costs depend on data availability. We are writing all the data to Layer 1, which is why we have exactly the same security, but it is expensive, it represents 95% of the cost.”
This also highlights a key barrier to making ZK-rollups the go-to scaling solution for the Ethereum ecosystem, unlike other solutions such as Optimistic Rollups.
Liochon also said that Linea aims to be a general-purpose ZK-rollup. It will be used for a variety of decentralized applications and solutions within the Ethereum ecosystem.
