Essonne: a 3-month-old baby shot dead, his mother hospitalized in serious condition

Tragic night in Milly-la-Forêt. A three-month-old baby died from injuries caused by a firearm on the evening of Wednesday, October 25, in this town in Essonne. His mother, aged 39, was also shot. She was found near the town’s equestrian center before being hospitalized in serious condition.

It was the father of the infant who transported the young victim to Fontainebleau hospital (Seine-et-Marne) around 11 p.m. According to his first statements, the 54-year-old man claims that he had been sent by his wife to Paris to run an errand for the child. He reportedly explained that upon his return around 9 p.m. he discovered his daughter, alone at the family home in Milly-la-Forêt, injured in the chest in her bassinet after having received at least one gunshot. He claims to have also found a pool of blood upstairs, suggesting that his wife was injured.

“The public prosecutor at the Evry judicial court confirmed that a three-month-old infant, with a gunshot wound to the chest, was dropped off at the Fontainebleau hospital (Seine-et-Marne) at 9:40 p.m. a 54-year-old man introducing himself as his father.” The father, also a municipal elected official, was arrested shortly after in the company of a 67-year-old friend who was taking him back to the hospital. The two men were taken into custody, according to the public prosecutor.

The baby died later that evening in hospital. For her part, the mother was found seriously injured by gunfire near the equestrian center of this small town. She was hospitalized overnight, her vital prognosis is guarded. A type 22 long rifle was seized from the couple’s home.

A judicial investigation was opened for “murder of a minor under 15 years of age” and “attempted murder by spouse” by the Evry public prosecutor’s office. The investigations were entrusted to the research section of the Paris gendarmerie.
