The members of this year’s ESC winner Kalush Orchestra do not live in a fancy hotel, but in a small new apartment building on Potsdamer Strasse. You are in Berlin for three days to record songs in the Sony studios. Several of them sleep in the same room, there is a drying rack in the kitchen, suitcases, music equipment. None of them speaks English, so you can speak to them only through an interpreter. The interpreter, a young woman from Kyiv, stepped in at the last second the day before – and almost overslept.
