Ernest Younger died in 1998 at the age of 103. He consciously experienced almost the entire 20th century, and his extensive, varied work reflects the ruptures of the century’s ideologies. In the First World War, as a shock troop leader, he was one of the youngest bearers of the highest Prussian bravery award, the Pour le Mérite, with more than a dozen wounds. As an infantry lieutenant, he was one of those who, statistically speaking, did not actually survive the war.
