He was apparently appointed “caliph” of the terrorist militia IS in Syria in November – now the Turkish President Erdogan announced the “neutralization” of al-Kuraishi. What is meant is that the terrorist is dead.

According to government information, the Turkish secret service “neutralized” the “so-called leader” of the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS) during a mission in Syria. Abu al-Husain al-Husaini al-Kuraishi has been persecuted for a long time, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the state news agency Anadolu.

The term “neutralization” probably means the killing of al-Kuraishi.

Reports on operations in the Northeast

As a correspondent for the AFP news agency in northern Syria reported, the Turkish secret service and the local military police, supported by Turkey, cordoned off an area near the city of Jindires in the Afrin region on Saturday. That is about ten kilometers from the Turkish border.

Local residents interviewed by AFP reported an operation at an abandoned farmhouse that was once used as an Islamic school.

IS cells active

At the end of November, the IS announced the death of its then leader Abu Hassan al-Hashimi al-Kurashi and appointed Abu al-Husain al-Husaini al-Kuraishi as the new “caliph”. Experts assume that the name was a combat name.

For years, the IS controlled large areas in Iraq and in the neighboring civil war country Syria. In the meantime, the extremists have lost their dominion again. However, IS cells are still active in both countries.

The Turkish government blames the militia for, among other things, an attack on the Istiklal shopping street in 2016, which killed four and injured 39 people.
