The selection of Mercedes electric cars is growing rapidly. The carmaker has now presented its first SUV model based on its new electric car platform. The EQS SUV appears with intelligent safety and entertainment systems and plenty of space.

After the EQE and EQS made their debut within a year, the EQS SUV will follow in the second half of the year. Mercedes presented the third model of the new platform specially developed for electric drives and the first SUV based on it on Tuesday.

It has the advantages of this design, such as “high power density, high efficiency and high performance consistency,” it says. The EQS SUV will appear in three different engines. Mercedes specifies its engine output as up to 544 hp.

In addition, the SUV should have a DC fast charging system with a maximum charging capacity of up to 200 kW. According to this, the lithium-ion battery on the fast charger charges from 10 to 80 percent in a good 30 minutes, and in 15 minutes the EQS SUV wants to have enough energy for a range of up to 250 kilometers according to WLTP. Mercedes offers an 11 kW on-board charger for use at home, with 22 kW available as an extra.

With a power consumption of between 24 and 18.6 kWh per 100 kilometers (depending on the engine), the provisional range should be between 536 and a maximum of 660 kilometers according to WLTP.

The EQS limousine is “current aerodynamic world champion”. Their design with a smooth underbody and mostly closed radiator is a good starting point for aerodynamic measures on the EQS SUV. The new SUV model thus has a “unique combination of space and aerodynamic efficiency”.

As with the EQS sedan, the edge height is 3.20 meters, but the SUV is 20 centimeters higher. Its counterpart with a combustion engine, the GLS, is ten centimeters higher. With a length of 5.13 meters, the EQS SUV should offer enough space. The trunk has a volume of 645 liters and, according to Mercedes, offers space for up to four golf bags. A third row of seats with two individual seats can be purchased as an option, the second row of seats can be moved electrically by 13 centimeters as standard.

Mercedes EQS SUV: Hyperscreen is the “highlight” in the interior

The cockpit is unchanged from the sedan, with the built-in hyperscreen being the “highlight”. The large curved screen consists of three screens, which are mounted under a common layer of glass and are intended to visually merge with each other. They stretch almost over the entire dashboard.

A 12.3-inch OLED display with its own display and control area is installed in front of the passenger. However, if the built-in camera detects that the driver is looking at the display, the system should automatically dim the dynamic content. However, the hyperscreen is not part of the standard equipment and is therefore available at an additional cost.

Mercedes promises “a new type of animation animation” in the interior with the help of the Dolby Atmos sound system. Individual instruments or voices should be able to be placed around the listening area and create a “360-degree experience”. For this purpose, an adaptive software should adapt to its users and make them personalized suggestions for various infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions.

The so-called over-the-air updates function, in which new vehicle functions can be activated remotely using updates, is to be “significantly expanded” in the EQS SUV. In addition to the driving programs Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual, the EQS SUV has an off-road program for off-road driving.

For example, a rigid passenger cell, special deformation zones and modern restraint systems should ensure the safety of the occupants. In addition to a system that is designed to recognize whether the rear seats are actually occupied and whether a passenger is not wearing their seat belt, the so-called person presence reminder is intended to indicate children who may have been left in the vehicle. There are also optionally available head-up displays in two sizes, which show relevant information and actions three-dimensionally in front of the driver on the windshield.

Market launch in autumn

The EQS SUV is likely to be the first all-electric SUV that can be driven with Level 3 of autonomous driving. In congested traffic on the Autobahn, the driver can then take his hands off the wheel at a maximum speed of 60 km/h. The market launch of the Stromer, which according to Mercedes is produced completely CO2-neutral, is planned for autumn. The 450+ variant will be the entry-level model.
