The corona pandemic does not have many positive sides, but definitely one: the interest in epidemiology – and thus the need for experts who are familiar with terms that have become commonplace such as incidence values, R values, vector and mRNA vaccines – has increased by leaps and bounds. This can be seen in inquiries for courses on the subject of epidemiology. The Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) Munich, for example, enrolls around 40 students annually for the four-semester master’s degree in Epidemiology. “Normally we have around 150 applications per year for the course, this year there were 288 applications,” says Ulrich Mansmann, head of the course and director of the LMU Institute for Medical Information Processing, Biometry and Epidemiology.
