Garbage was cleared away not only in Germany but also in the Netherlands this weekend. it is hard to believe what was fished out of the Maas in the province of Limburg, for example.

During a day of action, volunteers in the southern Dutch province of Limburg removed around 40 tons of waste from the Maas and from the banks. “It’s incredible what people throw into the Maas,” said Maas Cleanup organizer Huub Waterval after Saturday’s action, as reported by the ANP news agency.

Practically everything was found – piles of car tires, stacks of school books, bicycles and cigarette butts. 5,000 volunteers took part in the big clean-up, which was organized for the third time. They were supported by 50 companies, some of which made the campaign a company outing.

In the cities along the course of the river in the south, people also collected plastic waste lying around on Saturday. The Maas runs in the south of the Netherlands, not far from the border with North Rhine-Westphalia, from Maastricht via Roermond and Venlo towards Nijmegen.
