It happened in Vienna at a time when mayors were still rolling out red carpets for René Benko, the doors to top politicians were automatically opening for him and even the super-rich were courting him in the hope of doing business together. Once a year, the Tyrolean investor invited anyone who made it into Benko’s orbit to come to Vienna for Törggelen in his city palace. Harald Christ was once among the several hundred guests from top finance and politics – but only for a short time. “When Strache came in the door, I left immediately,” he says. Heinz-Christian Strache, the right-wing populist of the FPÖ and former vice-chancellor of Austria, who was supposed to stumble over the Ibiza affair. “I definitely didn’t want to spend the evening with him.”
