The German national parks offer the perfect opportunity to get some fresh air and experience diverse nature.
When you hear national parks, the first thing that comes to mind is often the Serengeti or Yosemite National Park. There are also particularly protected areas in this country that offer extensive and varied landscapes. 16 National parks that are not changed by human intervention can be found in Germany. Here are a few tips:
Bavarian Forest National Park
Together with the Bohemian Forest on the Czech side, the Bavarian Forest forms the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe. There are hills and valleys for undisturbed walks and hikes. The network of hiking trails stretches for around 350 kilometers through the national park. Other highlights, especially for families, include a forest play area and animal outdoor areas as well as a treetop path and a Stone Age cave.
Jasmund National Park
In a completely different corner of Germany lies the Jasmund National Park. On the island of Rügen, fans of rough coast and water will get their money’s worth. The national park area is known, among other things, for the high chalk cliffs that rise to 118 meters on the Königsstuhl. There is also a lot of forest, cliffs and moor to discover. A perfect place for hikers.
Saxon Switzerland National Park
The Saxon Switzerland National Park, a rocky national park in Saxony, is also rather smaller. The area is popular with climbers. But even those who stay on the ground can enjoy the national park with its legendary landscape with its bizarre rock formations, gorges and dense forests. Visitors can hike or just go for a walk on over 400 kilometers of marked and mostly well-developed paths. There are also cycle routes that stretch over 50 kilometers.
Eifel National Park
From wild cats to owls, there are many animal species to discover in the Eifel National Park in North Rhine-Westphalia. There are also forests, rivers and lakes that visitors can pass on a total of 240 kilometers of hiking trails. If you have more time, you should take on the wilderness trail: It leads through the national park on four daily stages with a total distance of 85 kilometers.
Berchtesgaden National Park
Myths and legends surround the Berchtesgaden National Park in Bavaria. The local highlights include the Watzmann and the Königssee, which is surrounded by mountain peaks. The protected area’s network of paths extends over 250 kilometers of hiking trails and paths. The Alpine National Park with its picture-perfect landscape offers enough fun for both experienced hikers and walkers. Cyclists can let off steam over 50 kilometers.
