The Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammad Barkindo, is dead. This was announced by the head of the state-owned Nigerian oil company NNPC. Barkindo died Tuesday shortly after meeting Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and appearing at an energy conference in the capital, Abuja. The 63-year-old was due to step down at the end of this month after six years. His tenure was tumultuous for the industry. Due to the Corona outbreak in 2020, the price of oil collapsed worldwide.
