After saying goodbye to its power plant business, Germany’s largest supplier wants to reduce its emissions to zero. How quickly this succeeds, however, depends heavily on what energy people buy.

The green zero

It’s hard to imagine when you drink it, but yes, beer also has a CO₂ balance. This also applies to König Pilsener: the brewery from Duisburg has so far burned coal to heat the mash or boil the wort. But instead, heat from the neighborhood will soon save the climate balance: Thyssenkrupp will in future route waste heat from the steelworks to the nearby brewery. The supplier Eon is building a line hundreds of meters long for this purpose.
