For sixteen months, since the general elections, the truce between Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella held. Now the state’s two most important representatives have clashed for the first time. Meloni obviously took a stand against Mattarella, although she did not name him and later denied the connection. Previously, he had directly interfered in current politics in a way that was previously unknown from him. This involved an excessively harsh police operation at an unauthorized pro-Palestinian demonstration in the Tuscan university town of Pisa.
