Vaccination remains a personal decision. But those who do not want to be vaccinated and have to be in quarantine cannot expect the community to promote and finance it.

A comment by Eva Ellermann, ARD capital studio

More pressure on the unvaccinated means more fairness for the majority of the vaccinated. As is so often the case in this pandemic, it is a tightrope walk of the unreasonable demands of the federal and state governments. And now this new one: Anyone who has to be in quarantine as an unvaccinated person after a vacation trip or as a contact person will no longer receive wage compensation. The Infection Protection Act provides that, most federal states are committed to it.

There will be further unreasonable demands that will make life more difficult for the unvaccinated: Corona tests will be charged as early as October 11th and more and more 2-G regulations are expected in public life – i.e. admission only for vaccinated and convalescent people.

Community protection relaxed

63.4 percent of the population in Germany are now fully vaccinated. You are protected yourself and therefore show solidarity with others. The fact is: the faster we create community protection, the more relaxed it will be for all of us. Everyone in Germany now knows that we, and especially our children, can only get out of this pandemic with a high vaccination rate.

We have the luxury of having enough vaccine for everyone. It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to get vaccinated – it can be done practically on the fly. And that’s why the good news is: Those who absolutely do not want to be vaccinated are slowly but steadily becoming fewer.

Anyone who hesitates now may have his or her reasons. Vaccination remains a personal decision. But: Those who make this decision and do nothing for the community cannot expect the community to promote, finance and take it into account. At least not in the long run. Whoever gets sick, vaccinated or unvaccinated, or who cannot be vaccinated, continues to receive wages.

Don’t pay for the defiant

We have to take the risk that unvaccinated people will deliberately break the quarantine rules or cause unrest in the company. But at least we shouldn’t have to pay for the defiant, whom we still haven’t convinced.

Millions of people in Germany are exhausted after more than a year and a half of the pandemic, but they are doing everything to get back on their feet, opening their bars, giving concerts and catching up on learning backlogs. It would be unreasonable for them to continue to bear additional burdens from the unvaccinated. It is reasonable for the unvaccinated to bear the consequences of their decision themselves.
