1,066,895 – that’s how many employees in Germany are 67 years or older according to a report. More than 400,000 of them are even over 70 years old. The recent trend continues with the year-on-year increase.

According to a newspaper report, the number of employed persons aged 67 and over has risen again in Germany. According to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (RND) from a response from the federal government to a request from the left, 1,066,895 employees were 67 years old or older this year. That was around 15,000 more than last year – and 200,000 more than in 2015.

The Federal Government’s answer also shows that currently more than 400,000 employees are already over 70 and around 138,000 are even over 75 years old.

In offices or on the street

According to this, employees aged 67 and over work in offices, in cleaning, warehousing, at the post office, in delivery or in building services engineering.

According to the information, 446 of the more than 13,000 employees who are 85 years and older are still employed as drivers in road traffic.

“For many, this is not a voluntary decision”

“Poverty in old age and small pensions are driving people back into the world of work,” said Dietmar Bartsch, the parliamentary group leader of the Left in the Bundestag, the RND. “For many, this is not a voluntary decision, but necessary because there is still a lot of month left at the end of the pension.”

Bartsch demands a minimum pension of 1,200 euros

In view of the record inflation, a major pension reform is becoming increasingly urgent, stressed Bartsch. He called for the pension level to be raised to 53 percent. He also advocated a minimum pension of 1,200 euros. “We need a pension fund into which all citizens with an income from work pay – including members of parliament, civil servants, the self-employed and ARD bosses,” said the parliamentary group leader.
