Emperor penguins: Photographer Stefan Christmann accompanied a pair of penguins

It is the most precious thing that pairs of emperor penguins have – a single egg. They take care of the children together. Photographer Stefan Christmann shared her southern polar world for months.

Two penguins stand head to head over an egg. An intimate moment! What do you see in the picture: instinct or love?
For me it is a promise that is made: the male promises his partner to take good care of this egg. And the male feels that the hardest time is just ahead of him.

Because winter is starting?
Exactly. And the Antarctic is by far the worst on this earth. Not just because of the cold.
