Emmy Awards 2023: German series “The Empress” wins in the main category

The award counts one of the most important film awards in the entertainment industry and has been awarded since 1949. A total of 56 productions from 20 countries were nominated in more than 90 different categories this year.

Four German productions were also among the nominations, including “The Empress,” which won the Emmy in the main category of “Best Drama Series” – a triumph for the German film industry. The last time a format from Germany was honored was in 2018.

The Netflix-Production about the famous Austrian empress won against the drama series “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” from South Korea, the secret service series “Yosi, the Regretful Spy” from Argentina and against the British production “The Devil’s Hour”.

Showrunner and screenwriter Katharina Eyssen and executive producer Jochen Laube were personally there in New York to accept the award. They were supported by other members of the production team, including Fabian Maubach, Scarlett Lacey, Annie Schilling, Katrin Gebbe and Florian Cossen. After the German series “Deutschland 83”, which won an Emmy in 2016, it is only the second time since 1949 that a German production won in a main category.

The three other nominations Germany – the ARDDocudrama “Nazi Hunters – Journey into the Darkness” as “best documentation”, Christian Berger’s “Classical Music under the Swastika – The Maestro and the Cellist of Auschwitz” for the category “Arts Programming” as well as the KiKa program “Meet… Anne Frank” for “Kids: Factual” – unfortunately came away empty-handed.
