Emmy Award 2021: “The Crown” wins – culture

The British historical series “The Crown” won the Emmy Award for best drama series of the year on Sunday. After four seasons, it is the first award in the king category of the most important television award in the world. The series, which is running on the streaming provider Netflix, is about the life of Queen Elizabeth II. Olivia Colman had previously received the award for best drama actress for this role. Josh O’Connor received the award for best male lead actor in a drama series for his impersonation of Prince Charles. “The Crown” also won awards for Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay on Sunday night.

The soccer series “Ted Lasso” was named the best comedy series of the year. Previously, lead actor Jason Sudeikis had already won the world’s most important television award. The two awards for the best supporting roles also went to the series running on Apple TV + about a US football coach turning a football club inside out in England. Hannah Waddingham was recognized for her role as club manager and Brett Goldstein for that of an aging football star. “Ted Lasso” had been nominated 20 times, a record for the first season of a new comedy.

At the beginning of the Emmy Awards, the invited US TV stars remembered the late rapper Biz Markie with the song “Just a Friend” and celebrated the power of television. “TV, you have what I need,” sang many of the nominees at the start of the show. Markie had died in July at the age of 57.
