Director Audrey Diwan wants to revive the erotic classic “Emmanuelle” from the 1970s. Now she announces the main actress.
The French director Audrey Diwan (“The Event”) wants to relaunch the erotic classic “Emmanuelle”, now she announces the leading actress. This is her Emmanuelle, Diwan wrote on Instagram on Monday for a photo of French actress Noémie Merlant. “I can’t wait to introduce you to this woman,” she continued.
Diwan, who was awarded the Golden Lion in Venice in 2021 with the abortion drama “The Event” (originally “L’Evénement”), makes her English-language debut with the “Emmanuelle” film adaptation. Merlant is known from films such as “Portrait of a Young Woman on Fire” or “Tàr”. Filming is said to be loud “Deadline.com” will begin in Hong Kong in September. Diwan told the film portal that the story will take place in a luxury hotel in Hong Kong. She co-wrote the script with screenwriter Rebecca Zlotowski (“Easy Girl”).

The French erotic film “Emmanuelle” with the Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel was a worldwide hit in 1974. The novel by author Emmanuelle Arsan was the template for the sexual coming-of-age story. It was about the erotic adventures of a young ambassador’s wife who travels to her elderly husband in Thailand and experiences sexual encounters with both sexes there.
