Emmanuel Macron will unveil the map of 200 new gendarmerie brigades on Monday

Emmanuel Macron will be at Tonneins (Lot-et-Garonne) Monday and will unveil on this occasion the locations of 200 new gendarmerie brigades, fixed or mobile, whose creation should last until 2027.

The Head of State announced the creation of these 200 brigades during the last presidential campaign during a trip to Nice in January 2022. “There will be between one and three or four brigades per department”, in mainland France and overseas. , we explain at the Elysée.

The first ones created in November

It is a question of responding to “the very strong expectation of proximity of the police and the gendarmerie” and of “strengthening the territorial network” of the State, we add. “Economic, demographic and operational” criteria, according to the needs expressed by elected officials and the gendarmerie, governed the choice of sites, after several months of consultation with the prefects. “It is a historic effort,” underlines the Palace, recalling that “more than 500 brigades” were abolished between 2007 and 2016.

The first will be created in November, the last to be created by the end of the five-year term, with credits from the Orientation and Programming Law of the Ministry of the Interior (Lopmi), passed last January.

The majority of these brigades will be mobile

Some brigades will be fixed, and equipped with around ten gendarmes, but the majority will be mobile, with around six soldiers. These will travel with a “truck” between the different municipalities in the most “landlocked” territories of their department.

“They will not be cheap brigades, they will be real gendarmes with digital and technological means, who will offer the same services as a fixed brigade”, starting with the filing of a complaint, we insist. Elysium.

In total, these creations represent 2,144 additional gendarmerie positions, out of the 8,500 creations of law enforcement personnel announced by the government by 2027.

The President of the Republic’s objective is to double the presence of law enforcement on public roads within ten years.
