The 48.7 million French people called to vote did not rush to the polls, while the three school zones of the country are on school holidays and abstention could be the great arbiter of the ballot. Abstention reached 28%, or 2.5 points more than in 2017 (25.44%), according to convergent estimates from four polling institutes.
Never has such high abstention been recorded in a second round of a presidential election, with the exception of the 1969 record (31.3%), when left-wing voters had, at the call of the communist candidate eliminated in the 1st round, massively refused to choose between “white cap and white cap” (Georges Pompidou and Alain Poher).
