Emmanuel Macron cancels his “great debate”

On the eve of the organization of his major debate at the Agricultural Show, the Head of State announced that he was taking “note” of the unions’ decision not to participate.

The president takes “note” of the unions’ decision not to participate on Saturday February 23 in his major debate at the agricultural show. This is why he decided, this Friday evening, to cancel it.

“The agricultural unions wanted this show not to be ‘a show like any other’. They wanted an open ‘debate’. They are today asking for its cancellation,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Emmanuel Macron therefore reacted to the cascading cancellations of the various agricultural unions. The FNSEA and the Agricultural Games protested against the initial announcement of an invitation by the Élysée of the Uprisings of the Earth.

Meetings before the opening of the show

Instead of this major debate, the Head of State specified that he would “invite all the agricultural unions tomorrow morning before the official opening of the show”. These meetings will take place at the Porte de Versailles. Before adding: “I will be there to open it and will contact all those who want to exchange as I do every year.”

Even without this “great debate”, the president will announce a “method to get out of the crisis”, the Élysée told BFMTV. He will go “in contact with farmers for as long as it takes”, added those around him.

An unexpected change of program a few hours before the opening of this particularly tense annual meeting this year, a few weeks after mobilizations of angry farmers throughout the country.

In a note that BFMTV was able to consult, a risk of “several actions” likely to disrupt the event is highlighted by territorial intelligence. The president risksbeing “whistled upon arrival” according to their information.

Other movements are planned, sometimes inside the living room. Some stands of major brands could be disrupted.
