Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of Mexican drug trafficker “El Chapo”, released

Even if Emma Coronel Aispuro remains on probation for four years, she is no longer between four walls. The wife of Mexican drug trafficker “El Chapo”, sentenced in November 2021 by the American courts to three years in prison, was released on Wednesday, according to prison administration records.

She had admitted her participation in the trafficking of the powerful Sinaloa cartel led by her husband Joaquin Guzman. In June 2021, she pleaded guilty to three counts: participation in drug trafficking, laundering monetary instruments and transactions with a foreign drug trafficker.

Life sentence for Joaquin Guzman

Aged 34, Emma Coronel Aispuro was held until her release in a closed center for prisoners at the end of their sentence on Long Island, California.

Joaquin Guzman was considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world until his arrest in 2016 and his extradition to the United States in 2017. Sentenced in July 2019 to life in prison after a trial under high security in New York, he is serving his sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado.
