First a deadly landslide in the southwest of the country, now a severe earthquake in the northwest. There are deaths here too.

Five people were also injured in the quake that hit the Xinjiang region on Tuesday, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported. The China Earthquake Center said the magnitude of the quake in Aksu district was 7.1. The US Earthquake Observatory USGS reported a magnitude of 7.0.

Search and rescue work continued in the mountainous region on the border with Kyrgyzstan. Numerous aftershocks were measured.

According to the information, the epicenter was around 50 kilometers from the municipality of Wushi. There are five villages within a 20-kilometer radius of the epicenter. 58 residential buildings and several stables collapsed during the quake, the “People’s Daily” reported. Shortly after the quake, the power supply temporarily failed in parts of the region.

Earthquakes occur again and again in the mountainous regions of western China. However, sparsely populated areas are often affected, so there are not high numbers of victims.
