In India, the rescue of workers trapped in a tunnel continues. They were still doing well, they said. They would be provided with food, water, oxygen and medicine.

Three days after the partial collapse of a tunnel shell in northern India, the rescue of around 40 victims is still ongoing. Now new material to free the people from the capital New Delhi would be flown to the scene of the accident in the mountainous state of Uttarakhand.

The emergency services are trying to drill 80 and 90 centimeter wide steel pipes through the rubble. The workers are supposed to get outside through this. They are still doing well inside, they said. They would be provided with food, water, oxygen and medicine.

The accident occurred early Sunday morning after a landslide. The approximately 4.5 kilometer long tunnel is being built near the small town of Uttarkashi in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand – a region with many Hindu temples that attracts many pilgrims. The collapsed part is around 200 meters from the entrance to the motorway tunnel.
