For Alexandra Popp it is the grandiose return to the big stage, for Jule Brand perhaps the international breakthrough. The DFB team has many winners even before the European Championship final.
Whatever the outcome of the final of the European Football Championship against England: The German women have already exceeded expectations and caused great enthusiasm.
Everyone praises the team spirit – but it’s also worth taking a look at the individual players. They are allowed to have a great certificate issued almost across the board before Wembley:
peak power:
Lena Oberdorf (VfL Wolfsburg): Energetic clearer with a lot of charisma in midfield and highly praised by the national coach. At only 20 years old, she has a great future ahead of her.
Alexandra Popp (VfL Wolfsburg): The captain shone in her first European Championship with six goals in the first five games and is playing up front again like she used to. In 2021 she dropped out with cartilage damage.
Svenja Huth (VfL Wolfsburg): Turbo kicker and preparer on the right wing, who never runs out of air even at 31. Consistently strong as at her club and as vice-captain with a lot of influence.
Reliable size:
Merle Frohms (VfL Wolfsburg): Until the unfortunate own goal in the semifinals without conceding a goal. Always on the go. Reinforced her position as number 1 and stepped out of Almuth Schult’s shadow.
Marina Hegering (VfL Wolfsburg): Went to the European Championship after a long absence from her former club FC Bayern – and refuted all skeptics. Sovereign defense chief, only faltered against France.
Sara Däbritz (Olympique Lyon): Very diligent in midfield, always playable – even if not always conspicuous up front. She is now challenged at her new club, the premier class winners from Lyon.
Kathrin Hendrich (VfL Wolfsburg): Established herself as a central defender. Quick to react and strong in one-on-one fights, intervened vigorously in the semi-finals as well.
Giulia Gwinn (FC Bayern Munich): As a right-back again with an increase in performance. Was often able to get out of tight situations in a playful way, with a lot of momentum going forward.
Lina Magull (FC Bayern Munich): The playmaker scored the all-important opening goals against Denmark and Austria. A bundle of energy. Slowed down in between with thigh problems.
Felicitas Rauch (VfL Wolfsburg): Before the EM a shaky candidate, during the tournament a secure full-back on the left. Also made a lot of steam on the offensive.
A bank from the bank:
Linda Dallmann: When she came, the smallest of the team at 1.58 meters caused a lot of fuss in the opposing defense. Even started against Finland and was named “Player of the Match”.
Lena Lattwein (VfL Wolfsburg): A favorite student of the national coach, extremely adaptable and in defensive midfield against Finland from the start.
Jule Brand (VfL Wolfsburg): Replaced Klara Bühl on the left attacking side in the semifinals and showed her international class. Also as a fast-paced short-term joker usually a win.
Sophia Kleinherne (Eintracht Frankfurt): Represented the blocked Rauch in the 3-0 win against Finland – and even scored the opening goal. Then went back to the replacement role without complaint.
Sara Doorsoun (Eintracht Frankfurt): Was considered a prank candidate before the tournament. But then she convinced as a substitute for the suspended Kathrin Hendrich against Finland in central defence.
Nicole Anyomi (Eintracht Frankfurt): Voss-Tecklenburg repurposes her from winger to full-back, which gives her a bit of a headache. Scored and still convinced against Finland.
Good soul:
Laura Freigang (Eintracht Frankfurt): Only played a quarter of an hour so far. But takes her “role as a supporter” very seriously and made a lot of noise from the bench and as a DJ in the dressing room.
part-time employees:
Tabea Waßmuth (VfL Wolfsburg): Came from the Champions League season with ten goals, but had to pay tribute to the strong competition in attack. Only three short missions.
Sydney Lohmann (FC Bayern Munich): Was allowed to play three times as a joker and had a knee irritation in between. Couldn’t show her strong form from the second half of the Bundesliga season.
unlucky:
Klara Bühl (FC Bayern Munich): Always dangerous in the front left. Already very far for their 21, scored the important opening goal against Spain. Missed in the semifinals due to a positive corona test.
Lea Schüller (FC Bayern Munich): The Bundesliga top scorer started well and scored against Denmark. But then I had to go into corona quarantine and have been out of the starting eleven ever since.
Without rating:
Almuth Schult (Angel City FC) and Ann-Katrin Berger (Chelsea FC): The two reserve goalkeepers were the only ones in the 23-man squad not to play.
