“I am certain that I am not the best placed to discuss with the Republicans”, affirms Edouard Philippe
On the BFM-TV set, Edouard Philippe, the former prime minister and current mayor of Le Havre, spoke in particular about the consultations with Emmanuel Macron. “The time is much more for the preparation of the sequel, for discussion with people in a political culture where compromise and coalition are unconventional, and that is what we have in front of us. »
“Yes, Emmanuel Macron is capable of compromise, he replied to the question of whether the President of the Republic was able to make concessions on his program. (…) Emmanuel Macron consults politicians, which is perfectly suited to the situation we are experiencing”he estimated.
“Dealing with difficult situations without a stable majority is truly an adventureunderlined the mayor of Le Havre. It is in the interest of the country to form a stable majority. It is an appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility that I make this evening. »
Should the presidential majority look towards the RN to govern? “When we place ourselves in a logic of coalition, it seems to me difficult to imagine that it can exist between the relative majority and the RN, the positions are radically contrary”, he replied.
The Horizons party boss was also asked to answer the same question regarding Les Républicains. “This is not possible with La France insoumise. The group that follows, with a field that is not the same and people who are often adversaries, is LR. I think it’s possible to have a discussion [avec eux], [de trouver] compromises that would be easy for the country”according to him.
“It is also possible on the left with the Socialists and the Greens. (…) This is the only way to have a coalition and it would be beneficial for the country. »
Deeming the situation “unprecedented”, Mr. Philippe added:
It’s not easy for LR or the majority. It’s not in our culture, it wasn’t announced during the election, but we need it. When the decisions are difficult, we need a base and we have to build it, especially with LR.
Could he be this missing link in the executive to carry out the coalition discussions with the group of Republicans? “I’m sure I’m not in the best position to discuss with LRs, who see me as an irritant. (…) I am not in the best position to show them that we are in a new logic. If we want to enter into a logic of coalition, it will undoubtedly be necessary to find new profiles. »
