Elias Holl and his fictional life as a builder – Bavaria

Without a doubt, the post was extremely strenuous. In the oil painting, which an unknown painter probably created in 1610 for the Augsburg municipal works master, 37-year-old Elias Holl looks at the viewer with self-confidence and a zest for life. Nine years later, the engraver Lucas Kilian captured an emaciated man with balding hair and deep wrinkles in his engraving. Holl is probably quite exhausted at the time from the new building of the town hall, a construction site that has kept him busy for four years, not counting the lengthy planning phase. But even in the previous years, the city master builder had already achieved a great deal.
