Electricity highway operator Amprion doubles investments – economy

The electricity transmission system operator Amprion sees itself on the right track when it comes to network expansion. Last year, investments more than doubled to a record value of around three billion euros, said Amprion boss Hans-Jürgen Brick on Thursday in Dortmund.

The legal measures to expand the network were having an effect, said Brick. This can be seen, for example, in an important large-scale project, the direct current connection A-Nord, which runs from Emden in Lower Saxony to Meerbusch-Osterath in North Rhine-Westphalia. The start of construction was brought forward by a year. From 2027, according to the Amprion boss, A-Nord, in conjunction with the Ultranet project, will be the first wind power corridor in Germany, transporting large amounts of green electricity from the North Sea to western Germany and as far as Baden-Württemberg.

Amprion is one of four transmission system operators in Germany. The others are Tennet, 50Hertz and TransnetBW. They operate the so-called extra-high voltage network, which transports electricity over long distances. These lines are also called “electricity highways.”

In the current year, Amprion wants to further increase investments to 3.9 billion euros. From 2024 to 2028 inclusive, the company expects investments of around 27.5 billion euros.

The high investments ensured higher income for the transmission system operator in 2023: adjusted profit after taxes rose by almost 50 percent to almost 340 million euros. Sales are around 4.8 billion euros.
