The duel between the general and the professor has been decided. Bulgaria’s former air force chief Radew prevailed against Gerdschikow, the rector of Sofia University, in the presidential election.

The Bulgarian head of state Rumen Radew clearly won the runoff election for the presidency. With 66.7 percent of the vote, the general of the reserve, Radew, won the second round of elections against his challenger Anastas Gerdschikow.

The rector of Sofia University came to only 31.8 percent, as the Central Election Commission (ZIK) in Sofia announced on Monday after counting a good 99 percent of the votes.

The 58-year-old Radew, whose term of office ends in January 2022, will remain head of state of the EU country for another five years. The former fighter pilot and air force chief as well as the university professor had run as independent candidates.

Radew was supported by the socialists who emerged from the former communists and the protest parties, Gerdschikow by the bourgeois GERB of the former head of government Boiko Borissow and the party of the Turkish minority DPS.

According to surveys, voter turnout on Sunday was less than 40 percent and thus even lower than in the first round of elections a week ago. However, this has no effect on the validity of the runoff election.
