In Sonneberg, Thuringia, an AfD candidate could be appointed district administrator on Sunday. The government’s anti-racism commissioner is calling for a common “fire wall” against enemies of the constitution.

The federal government’s anti-racism commissioner, Reem Alabali-Radovan, has called for other parties to stand together in view of the AfD’s poll high. “The firewall against the AfD’s enemies of the constitution must not crumble,” said the SPD politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Saturday). “All democratic actors have a responsibility that we don’t let ourselves be divided as a society,” she added.

The great challenges of our time must all be tackled together. The migration debate must be objective. “It’s about respect and not clumsily dividing into ‘They’ and ‘We’,” warned Alabali-Radovan.

On Sunday, an AfD candidate in Sonneberg, Thuringia, has the chance to be elected district administrator in a runoff. It would be the first municipal top office for the AfD nationwide. In surveys nationwide, the right-wing populist AfD is currently between 18 and 20 percent, and significantly higher in the five East German states.
