There couldn’t be more bandwidth: The Reflexionr Festival, curated by André Heller, started in Hamburg with Peter Sloterdijk and a spiritual Sufi Night.

The Austrian universal artist André Heller curated the festival Reflexionor in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg: On Saturday, the opening day, the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk will discuss aspects of being foreign in a conversation with the bass-baritone Florian Boesch in the small hall.

Meanwhile, Boesch, accompanied by pianist Justus Zeyen, presents excerpts from the romantic song cycle “Winterreise” by Franz Schubert. It is astonishing with what intellectual ease both of them establish connections in the dialogue between the melancholy of the wanderer in Schubert and the existential loneliness of man.

At the following Sufi Night in the large hall, the audience is carried away by the cheerful melodies and ecstatic rhythms of the Gnawa singer Hind Ennaira from Morocco, while she nimbly plays the bass lute Gimbri and seeks contact with spirits – flanked by members of the group Black Koyo , operating huge metal castanets.

After the break, the Quawwali songs of the brothers Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad, superstars in their home country of Pakistan, are also deeply imbued with mysticism. In their ecstatic question and answer songs they fuse prayer, singing, harmonium, tabla and drums. And the audience applauds enthusiastically. Famoudou Don Moye and the “Odyssey & Legacy” trio, Jimmy Webb as well as Camilla Nylund and Angélique Kidjo will be guests until March 24th.
