Only 45 points and still have a Champions League chance? There are opportunities for Eintracht Frankfurt to qualify for the premier class at the end of the season – even through a defeat on the last matchday.

In the complicated calculation game about qualifying for the Champions League Eintracht Frankfurt even benefited from their own defeat in the final stretch of the Bundesliga season. The Hessians can only move into the premier class in sixth place if Borussia Dortmund (or FC Bayern) wins this year’s Champions League and at the same time only finishes fifth in the league. However, if BVB were to finish fourth in this scenario, they would lose their place in the Bundesliga. First, the “Kicker” reported on the currently theoretical calculation game.

The constellation on the 34th matchday on May 18th (3:30 p.m.) could be quite explosive: Frankfurt will face RB Leipzig, Dortmund’s direct rival, in front of their own crowd. If Leipzig stays ahead of Dortmund, that could have a positive effect for the 2022 Europa League winner. It is not yet certain that Germany will win fifth place in the Champions League for the competition that will be expanded next season, but it is very likely.

For Eintracht Frankfurt it depends on BVB

In order for a defeat to pay off for Eintracht, BVB would have to survive the semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain and reach the final on June 1st in London. Frankfurt (45 points) would also have to have secured sixth place against their pursuers beforehand in order to no longer have any pressure on themselves to achieve results. If Dortmund ends the season in fifth place, an outcome of the Wembley final with BVB participation would decide whether a sixth premier class place is possible for Germany.
