Eight soldiers’ graves vandalized

Graves were once again vandalized in the military square of the cemetery in the Saint-Claude district of Besançon (Doubs). This time, it is about eight graves of soldiers fallen for France, we learned Wednesday from the prefecture of Doubs. Similar acts had in fact occurred a few years ago, assures Jean-Claude Rebière, general delegate of Souvenir français du Doubs.

“A despicable act”

In a press release, the prefect of the department, Jean-François Colombet expressed “his indignation at the degradation of these graves of soldiers who fell for France” and condemned a “vile act of vandalism”. He underlined that “this unspeakable action comes at a time when the funeral honors have just been paid to Sergeant Baptiste Gauchot, member of the 19th Engineer Regiment based in Besançon, who died for France during an external operation in Iraq”.

“These acts are outrageous,” said Jean-Claude Rebière, general delegate of Souvenir français du Doubs. “We are responsible for maintaining the graves of soldiers who died for France located in the military section of this cemetery,” continued Jean Claude Rebière. “Go find out who it is! People pass through the cemetery at night and clearly cannot stand the presence of these soldiers’ graves. » Wednesday evening, the Besançon police station was not aware of a possible complaint being filed.
