Eight out of ten French people say they waste food, according to a study

Christmas and New Year’s Day are an opportunity to treat yourself. When we go shopping before New Year’s Eve, we imagine a large table filled with dishes, each one as appetizing as the next. But do we think about the foods that will be left on the floor and which, very often, will end up… in the trash? According to a YouGov study for the Too Good To Go app *, relayed this week by France Intermore than eight out of ten French people say they waste food during the end-of-year celebrations.

The “palm” of this food waste would go to young people. The study reveals that 14% of 18-34 year olds estimate they throw away more than a quarter of the food purchased. The main reason for all this: the fear of missing out, which concerns more than half of those questioned.

Which dishes are the most wasted?

At the top of the list, bread is presented as the most wasted food. Followed by the accompaniments for the main dishes (rice, pasta, potatoes, etc.), the aperitifs (toasts, verrines, etc.). But meats and desserts are not spared.

Still, hope remains, since French people still have some reflexes to avoid this massive food waste. Among them, according to the study, 63% of those questioned freeze leftovers, and 41% give them to family members or friends.

* Study carried out among 1,011 people representative of the French national population aged 18 and over.
