If the matter weren’t so devastating, it would have a subtle irony: the very states that are getting caught up in the panic over uncontrolled immigration, that are defending any isolation by pointing out that more refugees endanger stability – are the very ones that are demanding that Egypt accept hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from Gaza, of course for “humanitarian reasons”. Egypt officially plans nothing of the sort, not even for the prospect of debt relief. The European Union should take in a million refugees, quotes the Financial Times an angry official from Cairo: “You’re worried about human rights? – Will you take them?”
