The football world mourns Egidius Braun. The longtime DFB President died at the age of 97.

The long-standing DFB President Egidius Braun is dead. This was announced by the German Football Association. The 97-year-old died in his hometown of Aachen on Wednesday night.

The new DFB President Bernd Neuendorf paid tribute to Braun’s merits: “Today is a sad day for all footballers in Germany and Europe. With Egidius Braun we are losing a special person who used the possibilities of football to help those who need support and attention. He was particularly driven by concern for children and young people in need.”

Egidius Braun was DFB President for nine years

Egidius Braun was President of the DFB from 1992 to 2001, where he had previously worked as Treasurer for 15 years. After his time at the top, he was appointed DFB honorary president. In the same year, the foundation named after Braun was founded, which takes care of social integration projects and children in need at home and abroad.

After the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Braun attached particular importance to helping children in need in the Central American country. His charitable commitment brought him a lot of respect, even outside of the football world. The studied lawyer and philosopher as well as passionate hunter was called “Father Braun” or “the social conscience of German football”. In 1991, Braun was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

Egidius Braun leaves two sons, his wife had already died in May 2020. The DFB announced that Braun’s funeral would take place in the closest family circle.
