Education – Fresh air in the classroom – District of Munich

After the rejection of the mobile air filters in the classrooms by the local council, Oberschleißheim’s schools may now be retrofitted with permanently installed ventilation systems. A structural investigation showed that central ventilation systems were not feasible in both local schools, now the installation of decentralized systems is to be followed in every room. The municipality wants to start the project this year in order to be able to tap the state subsidies.

At the elementary school Parksiedlung, which is being renovated over the years, such a system was already discarded in the planning when Corona was not yet an option, it said from the town hall. The retrofitting of a ventilation system, which had been recommended by the energy consultant, failed due to the structural requirements. An installation would have required massive further interventions.

At the Berglwald School, the three components of the school that have been built over the years have to be built with individual ventilation systems, which is extremely time-consuming. The third and youngest component already has such a system – but it is permanently switched off because of its noise. Decentralized room air systems are conceivable in both schools. Such a ventilation machine would be installed in every classroom. In order not to lose too much space in the classroom, the devices should be installed on the ceiling.

The first estimates assume retrofitting costs of around 500,000 euros at the Parksiedlung school and 600,000 euros at the Berglwaldschule. However, both planned models would meet the state requirements for the volume of air exchange achieved, so that this year state funding of up to 80 percent of the costs could be achieved.

Mayor Markus Böck (CSU) was rather hesitant. Ventilation is helpful, but not a panacea. It does not spare other measures such as testing or masks and, in the case of positive corona tests, no separate treatment of ventilated classes is to be expected. Most of the time, however, the local council urged rapid further steps. Just leaving the options in the room was “just a sedative pill,” reprimanded Helga Keller-Zenth (Greens). Casimir Katz (FDP) said that ventilation of this kind makes sense in principle for classrooms, regardless of the corona balance, because you have to take the opportunity to get it lavishly promoted.
