The US food company Mars and the supermarket chain Edeka have ended their dispute over price increases. Numerous products will soon be back on the shelves – confectionery, cat food and rice.
For around a year and a half there were no products from the US food manufacturer Mars in the supermarkets of Edeka and its discount subsidiary Netto. In the dispute over prices, the markets had delisted products such as chocolate bars and cat food. Now they are returning to the shelves. The companies have settled their dispute.
Agreement on lower prices
First, chewing gum from Mars (such as the Airwaves and Wrigley’s brands) should be available again in the markets, followed by chocolate bars such as Mars or Twix and pet food (Whiskas, Chappi). But staple foods offered by the group such as rice (Uncle Ben’s) will also be available again.
In total, around half of the 400 Mars products should be available again. They said they had agreed on lower prices and significantly better conditions than Mars originally demanded. Edeka did not comment on any details.
“We are pleased to be able to offer our customers Mars items again soon,” said an Edeka spokesman. Mars said: “Our interest is to work in partnership and successfully with all trading companies.”
Dispute since August 2022
The dispute broke out around a year and a half ago. According to media reports, Mars had demanded 20 percent price increases during price negotiations. Edeka didn’t want to accept that.
As a result, Mars stopped deliveries. Other trading companies were also affected. However, Edeka is still arguing with other brand manufacturers.
